Considerations

PLANNING

Kevin Lynch / Catherine Dee categories:

  • Districts / Spaces
    • What are the spaces used for? How do you know?
    • What is their proportion & character
    • How are spaces between houses used?
    • How clear is the ownership of spaces?
  • Edges:   Public - Private transitions:  who can enter where?  How do you know?
  • Nodes:  Where do people interact?
  • Paths:  Where are the cars?
  • Landmarks:  how do you know you have arrived?

ARCHITEcTURE

  • Does the place have curb appeal?  What aspects make you like it?How many chunks do you read in the massing?  What defines each chunk? (i.e. form, color, materials, openness...)
  • How do they relate to human scale?  (measure places for people, draw a section & photograph)
  • What are their proportions?
  • How do the buildings mark entrance or areas of symbolic importance?
  • How do they make connection or separation?

NATURE

  • How does the landscaping shape space and contribute to the composition?
  • Where does the water go?
  • How are passive or active solar strategies used?
  • Can you see how ventilation might work?
